"It was then, huddled there in the darkness of the cabin, our lamps and heaters turned low so as to conserve our fuel, that we heard it; the dull inexorable scrape of the ice against the hull. The sound slowly sickened the hearts of the men, it bores its way into our dreams, then our waking moments, until our jaws clench and our teeth began to grind in chorus. Our brows knitted together and our temples pound with the rush of blood. We busied ourselves as we could. We spoke little, each man lost within his own dark reverie.
Then news came that the remaining food stores on board had been found rancid.."
"The decision had been made then. To leave the ships and set out across the ice fields. Those still strong enough were chosen to make the journey and return with food, fuel or aid. But each man, whether still able or laying upon his sickbed, knew the truth of it; that those ships would become as charnel houses.
The Chaplain said a prayer for all, but God held no sway in that wretched land. Something other, something savagely alien and primal, held it's rule there, and we were it's newest disciples"
This album is inspired by the mystery of the lost ships, Erebus and Terror, and their crews, forever amidst the eternal ice.
